“The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.” In a world fraught with dangers, we need to be aware and realize, some moments are more opportune than others. The word ‘opportunity’ finds its roots in a Latin nautical phrase “ob portus” which speaks of waiting for just the right conditions to get ships safely into harbor.
As Christians, we are taught to “make the best use of the time.” We learn that it is possible to lose opportune moments but it is also possible to lose ourselves. Ephesians 5:15-17 tells us of the danger. “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” We live in an evil world full of traps and snares set by the enemy. Living impulsively is dangerous for us physically and spiritually, so our decisions must be grounded in wisdom of the will of God found in His word.
Nevertheless, we are not to fearfully flee from the enemy but to take advantage of the opportunities God provides. Some translations call it, “redeeming the time,” meaning buy it up. Like a smart shopper who recognizes a good sale and takes advantage of the opportunity. Colossians 4:5-6 says “Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” Preparation through prayer and study will provide us with the wisdom we need to recognize the opportune moments that lie before us. Living for Christ and speaking the words of Christ guarantees we will safely and successfully maneuver in the world.
