We were preparing to head home, the boys and I, when I found it, the perfect skipping stone. Untold thousands had already found a new home at the bottom of the river, but none had the smooth curves, low profile, and perfect weight of this one. The wonder of finding the perfect rock sitting there untouched amidst so many others yet unnoticed was not lost on any of us. Most of our audience had left the scene, the few that remained urged restraint. “Save it for next time”. . . “keep it, we can paint it.” But deep down we all knew, this stone was created over thousands of years for one purpose and for one moment. So, I gathered all the clumsy skill at my disposal, pushed away my doubts and let fly. Even in the hands of an amateur it’s hard to fail with the perfectly prepared stone.
Ephesians 2:10 says, “We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” As God moves in this world, he is looking for individuals that are ready to be taken off the shoreline and put to use. A person who, with each good work done in submission to His will, sees ripples expanding shoreward slowly polishing new stones, to the glory of the Father. The most beautiful pairing of perfect stone and perfect throw occurs only after much preparation. The man who is God’s workmanship must have his rough edges removed and be shaped to fit God’s hands. Only then will he hit every mark and fly to his potential. We are rocks polished by God in Christ, made to accomplish His purposes. Perfection does not come from our effort but from our submission to and trust in Him. Will God find you ready?
